The People’s Firehouse. A fire station has occupied 34 Winthrop Street in Charlestown, MA since 1853. In 1981, the City of Boston tried to sell the building amid financial troubles, but locals staged protests and sit-ins to save the building and station.

A similar scenario played out in 2015 or so when Boston wanted to relocate Engine 50 to another nearby station. The neighbors got their way and instead of relocating the station, it underwent a $3.8 million renovation and remains an important part of the community, the People’s Firehouse.
